I am looking into taking up a new sport. I am a year on from a knee ligament op picked up playing football, I also suffer from asthma and have a very stressful job. I was thinking of yoga, tai chi or pilates. I am looking at playing football again in the new year and I do a lot in the gym. Out of the 3 activites above, which would be best to complement this?

Yoga would be the best in my opinion. Start out with a begining yoga class. You can tell the instructor about your injury (as most instructors will ask before a class. If they don't, then you have to make the effort to do so, or find another instructor who cares) or you can even find a yoga therapy class that specializes in injuries. I have gone to many different kinds of yoga styles, and I would take the easier ones with an instructor who works with injuries (usually a yoga therapist).
Why yoga? Because it is low impact and the only stress you put on your injury is yourself. Yoga can also strengthen your muscles around your injury to help it heal and with proper alignment of the body, you can help it to not become injured in the future (when you return to football).

Yoga. It will help in all areas. The asthma-it will relax your breathing and you have to take deep breathes therefore you are getting more oxygen circulating through your body. Second it could help the ligament problem in your knee. Stretches in yoga long-ate your body. And last the stress part, it will definitely relieve that! I promise! Yoga is such a calming experience. It works mind, body, and soul.

I would have to say yoga to get some full stretches and learn to breath and relax. It will help your total body. I don't know about going back to football, would hate to see you injure that knee again. My favorite new sport is Scuba diving, lots of different levels you can do with lots of cool people. Good Luck

I agree with Rose swimming would be best for you. the water supports your weight so taking stress off of the joints. You will feel as if you are not working out (because the water cools you) but you will be. Try and do water based exercise too like punches under the water with your palms forward and fingers closed.
