Amish people wear dark broadcloth clothing and the men grow beards while the women grow their hair long and cover it.
Jewish people wear skull caps
Construction workers wear Dickies or Carharts and have rough work worn hands
Gay men, often, dress very nicely, are somewhat effeminate and speak "gay" or whatever you want to call it-sort of like blacks speaking eubonics.
Lesbians are harder to tell unless they are the Dikes in the relationship, then you look for short hair and manly tendancies.
ALL of this can be disputed and changed and none of it is set in stone.
I think gay men want other gay men and just people in general to know they are gay.
The ones that want to be discreet do not conform to the standard set by the gay community and what the rest of the world has come to know as flamin!

Many people use sterotypes. Not a good practice, but people are people and not always very smart. So if a guy wears pink, he MUST be gay! Woman likes to wear flannel shirts and work boots? Same thing! Never mind that they both might be straight as an arrow and just happen to like that stuff. Hope this helps a bit.

Some people believe that 'gayness' is determined by female genes in males and vice versa in females. This may or may not have a bearing on the matter and to a certain extent is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things as sometimes people just are, there isn't a nice neat explanation however perplexing that might be to some.

This belief is exaggerated by the media and social groupings. Certain people feel they need to belong and therefore mimic behaviours and even clothes that they feel 'qualifies' them to belong to a certain group and like it or not the media dictates to alot of people their 'social norms'

Therefore the reality is sexuality is far from black or white and is as individual and unique as the next person. However as social creatures we can sometimes feel unsettled or even threatened by this so we become even slaves to our stereotypes in order to 'protect ourselves' and feel we have social acceptance on one level or another.

It's easier and faster to think in terms of stereotypes, and a lot of people are too self absorbed to put more than a minimal effort into what's up with other people.

Usually, that's how people associate with others' sexuality. When we watch MTV and read magazines, the homosexuals we see on there are very stereotypical...Plus, it is kind of rude to just be like "Are you gay?"...It's just how modern society rolls these days.

Humans have a need to categorize people. So naturally they will start off with what they see.

People get judged by the way they look on regular basis, sad but true.

Because humans are basically lazy. Its easier to make up stereotypes and assume they are truths than to actually get to know other humans.

Mostly people just question the unknown and feel they have to label it. I personally don't see the point. "To each his own"
