There's a rumor at my college that I'm an atheist. Of course it's not true, but everybody believes it...and during this, I've found out that some of my "friends" are the ones helping to spread it...what do you all do when a untrue rumor breaks out? By denying it, you're only making it worse...and by keeping quiet, you're making it seem true....it's a lose-lose situation.........

better to ignore rumors of yourself if you find yourself in the truth

Your best bet is to just laugh it off. You're right about it getting worse if you try to deny it. If someone asks you if you're an atheist, just laugh and say "Of course not!". Don't protest too much - just find the situation amusing. It worked with some of the rumors my 'friends' had spread about me at one point.

It may seem like a lose, lose, situation. But really ignoring false accusations is just the best thing to do. In time people will get tired of spreading it around. As for those so called friends, they are not really your friends to spread untruths about you. The bible calls these ones vipers, or snakes. They are like Satan, who spread lies about God. I would change my friends. Or give them a piece of my mind, in a tactful way of course.

Hi there, you have to disipline yourself each day to overcome this problem, here is advice from a book called, The Four Agreements

1. Be impeccable with your word
speak with integrity, say only what you mean, avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others, use the power of your word in the direction of love and truth.

2. Don`t take anything personally.
nothing others do is because of you, what others say and do is the projection of their own reality, their own dream.
when you are immune to the opinions of others, you wont be the victim of needless suffering.

hope this helps & good luck.

Be the best person you can be. What you see is a reflection of your own thoughts. Change your thoughts and change your life. When you figure out what this means you will no longer have any losing situations.

If it is serious enough to affect your career or influence your ability to college learning then threaten to sue them for deformation of character if that doesn't work spread a rumor that they are Satanists and attacking Christians or whatever you are.

I never use words, I act. If you´re not an atheist, go to church. If anybody in your college sees you, they will stop those stupid rumors.

confront the people spreading the rumours directly. and don't let yourself get bothered by it. and don't sink to their level. get new friends. it's really difficult but trust me, losing sh*t friends is opening a doorway to gaining real people who'll stick around for you.
