Not sure how your other answerer knows whether animals have souls or not..............I'd like to think that all sentient beings have souls.
However, ignoring philosophy, my view is that there is, in fact, very little distinction between a human and an animal. Mostly we all have the capacity to learn, mostly we all possess some semblance of intelligence, and mostly we run our lives according to the rules of some kind of hierarchical society.
The basic difference I believe is the humans capacity to communicate abstract thoughts via langauage. Although chimps and bonobos have displayed some capacity for this, in humans this is extremely highly developed and allows us to progress and develop very quickly without having to re-learn (ie. we don't re-invent the wheel every generation). It is this capacity that has allowed humans to outstrip other animals in our development towards (allegedly) "higher intelligence".
See the attached links for some arguments regarding this.

Native Americans and many others believe even trees have feelings ,
it is this lie ,of God ,that is largely responsible for animals being treated badly and the diminishing of the Natural world

Self awareness was my first answer.
But in the newspaper today I saw that chimps and elephants display that.
So I'm going with chimps and elephants as humans!

Humans have the ability to make rational decisions. Their brains are so advanced, in comparison to animals. Animals only do things because of instinct. Animals are in subjection to man.

Any qualitative differences would have to be spiritual, not biological. Any biological differences, such as degree of brain development, are purely quantitative.
