After I ans abt d tipping 4 d waiter/ waitress. I begin to love S'pore more & more. I love my gov. who r wise. Asked ppl not 2 tip in d restaurants & hotels b'coz most of them r paid according 2 their job scope.

I think everybody should encourage gov. to ask d service line 2 pay their staff well. After all they work 4 d company instead of d customers & waiting 4 customers 2 tips.

I wonder y u don't encourage on receiving regular pay instead of thinking abt tipping. If I'm waitress, I would like 2 have regular pay according 2 my job scope. I do not like 2 have a pay where I do not know abt 2moro. What happen if there is a season where fewer customers visiting d restaurant? Work is 4 us 2 earn a living, so we should get regular pay check. What happen if d tips doesn't reach 2 d waiter or waitress u wanna give? Who knows d owner of d restaurants collected all d tips. Do u think this fare?

In Iceland, tipping is considered rude.

What I think I got out of that question is to ask the government to make restaurants pay living wages. It would be a nice idea, but also put owners out of business. When I was a waitress, I'd figure out my pay+tips, and I'd frequently be at $30+ per hour, and that's tables that stiffed me counted in. That's better than a lot of other jobs!

I also hate the concept of working for a place where everyone pools tips. Where's the incentive to do a good job when your coworkers are slackers?

So tip well for good service.

Well, I sort of disagree with you..
I was a bartender 8 1/2 years and a waitress for 4 after that...
I can assure you that I was making peanuts from actual salary and NEEDED my tips .. that was my money.
I like that I always had money in my pocket, able to keep working until I met my tip goal of the day & birthday's, anniversaries, holidays were made brighter with the extra lil tip from this customer &/ that 1.
BTW.. remember that waitressing is one of oldest professions, also & many a single mom / single college student has supported herself that way.
Also, from the other angle as the tipper.. I like to tip. I think excellent service should be commended and I appreciate added time/ service/ or attention that someone has given me in the aid of my enjoyable time away from home.
In same respect, I like the fact that if I get crappy service I can say "screw you" with my lower tip adjustment.....

Tipping is quite basic really...D server serves you the way you want to be served and you leave D tip.D person takes your groceries to D car and you give them D tip. A person changes your tire for you when your stranded on D side of the road and you offer Dem a little money for going OUT OF THEIR WAY to do you a service...and you might call it a tip. There are the servers who bring your bucket of tea to d table and leave it for you to pour..then there are those who make a living and pour your tea into a glass that's never empty. Why would they do that for you if the owner took their hard earned money?Out of the way service=compensation.

hi

in my point of view, it is depend on the restaurant protocol and policy .. ususally the pay that the waiter or the waitress get is very little.. as for tipping, i do encourage... some of the waiter or waitress have different needs to it like PUB bills, etcs.

best regards

why do you say "d" so much?

Anyway, I've been a waitress in 4 different restaurants for 6 yrs. now and I have complained before, saying "Why can't we get a normal hourly wage?" BUT, now I realize that I make WAY more than minimum wage most of the time and it's better this way.

Servers depend on tips to make ends meet, so I believe that tipping is very important to a lot of servers. Even if the service is not that great, I at least give a couple of dollars.

Holy cow. Your post gave me a headache. First off, if you are in America then you should know that Servers are paid $2.01 an hour in wages flat out. And they never get that paycheck because the government takes it in taxes based on your sales. So if you dont tip the server the server isnt being paid period. For serving your food, cleaning up after you. If you dont want to tip then you should cook your own food, serve it to yourself and clean up afterwards.

Wow. Your typing really sucks. Or is it your grammar? Though your queation gave me a headache, I have to say tipping isnt going anywhere. If I wanted to make a rate of pay, I'd work at McDonalds. Its called SERVICE. Mine is excellant, and I am tipped well for it.

First of all, you should really learn how to type.
Servers make a living on the service they provide.
There are servers making over $50,000 a year.
Like anything else, it takes hard work and determination.

If you don't like to tip (because you are cheap)
then you should go to the grocery store,
fix your own meal, clean up your own mess
and just stay out of restaraunts entirely!
While your waiting for your meal to be ready, maybe you could work on your communication skills!
Have a nice day.
