Just wondering what the easiest, most economical way would be. Thanks for any help!

Well it's hard to say it could either be:
a) some of the wood is warping (bending)
b) the fixtures are coming loose

I have some builders in my home right now doing a loft conversion and the stairs they have put in are already squeaking. After inspecting I found that the wood was not firmly in place in some of the fixings.

My way round this was to get some wood lying around the garage and cut them down in size. Then squeezed them into the gaps after putting in a lot of wood glue. Now the squeaking has gone.

There's no real easy way around this but to get a carpenter to have a look. Or a friend who's quite confident with wood work.

You're going to get several anwer that tell you to use talcum powder, and while that may work in some instances, it is of course a temporary fix. If you can isolate the exact spot, see if you can acess it from under the stairs. you can then either toe-nail a short wood screw into the support joists underneath, or if the toe-nail (screw on an angle) won't work, use and "L' bracket with two screws. Wooden floors/stairs squeak when nails begin to pull out and it causes the boards to move just even to make a noise. Using screws to repair the movement makes it more different for the screws to pull out later on, keeping boards inplace for a longer period of time.

Thin hardwood wedges & wood glue. Under the stairs all the steps & raisers are fitted into the side runners & have come lose.Put glue on the wedges & hammer them into the runners with glue on the ends to tighten them all up, sometimes u need a nail in the wedge to hold it too.

I also spent some time in front of the computer for some tips on how to fix squeaky stairs, and I found this article here very useful: http://www.miconstruguia.com/en/how-to-fix-squeaky-stairs/
Hope this works for you too.

Have you tried working a powder (like baby powder) into the spaces between the boards?
