By far it is the biggest con job that has hit the cinema. I don't ever remember another film being so hyped up only for it to consist of a few twigs and trees on a camcorder in the woods with a bit of heavy breathing and screaming thrown in. When I went to see it, people were walking out half way through and everyone, including me, thought it was one big wind-up.

The producers of the film started spreading rumours about a "blair witch" about 4-5 years prior to shooting the film. Then when the movie was released, there were actually people that swore it was true! It was quite low budget film as there was no fancy expensive props or sets and they made lots of money.

I'd have to say it was a bit of a con job; what with all the effort they put into leading us to believe it was real prior to the opening.
The Sci-Fi channel put out the "Curse of the Blair Witch," that fake (supposedly real) documentary, with interviews by the missing students' alleged family members and whatnot.
At the Cannes film festival, the producers even put up "missing posters" of the students.
If I recall, even the IMDB website had them listed as "Missing/Presumed Dead" for a bit before it all came out.
What they tried to do was an interesting concept, of that, I'm certain... but you can't expect to pull the wool over the entire population's eyes on something of that scale and not expect them to resent you a bit.
It was a good movie... my poor friend thought it was real the entire time we watched it, and she shook violently the entire way home.
I guess I'm guilty, too... I knew she was going into the movie thinking it was real, and I suppose I didn't want to ruin it for her. But, I took pity on her on the way home, the poor thing was almost worked up to the point of tears. Of course, she didn't believe me, and I had to show her on the Internet when we got home that it wasn't real. Didn't ruin it a bit for her, knowing, though... she was glad it was a hoax.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO SAY??? "Come see the Blair Witch Project, a kind of scary movie". It's only a con job if you saw it and said "Wow, they said it was the scariest movie ever, so it must be!"

Well we all know now its not real considering the creators have admitted it and talked about how they made the noises outside the tent on numerous tv programmes! So I dont see how its a con job its a film!

It's scary, but if you know it's fake previous to seeing it, it makes the film more wattered down.
It's scary, so the hype was somewhat correct, but I suppose you could be right with it being overrated.
