Hello

I am wondering why women have to change their family names when they get married in the west?

Is that coming from christianity? or is it just about culture?

Thanks

Alessandr,
Women do not have to change there names after marriage. They do it a lot though. It simply shows the world that you and your husband are connected to each other in a special way. It can also be beneficial in other ways such as identification purposes. My daughter in law did not change her last name and they do have problems with idenity and eligibility concerns, like insurance coverage and banking, etc. So it's probably a good thing to do, but it's not required. Showing respect to your spouse by taking his last name seems to me is a special love token, but I guess it's not for everyone.

Very few women take their maiden name as their middle name after marriage. I know of only two women to do so. Go ahead and drop your maiden name - it's okay.

you dont have to change your name, i just think that women want to, maybe its a cultural thing, but i think when a woman gets married, she takes pride in taking the last name of her husband. the name she will keep, the name she gets because she loves a man

The bible says you shall leave your parents and cling to your husband. The name change shows that you have done this, It slao shows that the women is submissive to the husband, just as the husband is to Christ.

It's tradition. to give yourself wholly to your husband. We don't "have" to. It isn't required but as a tradtion most of us do. Anyway , if we have kids it makes it easier on the children.
