We got our two pumpkin lanterns stolen last night. I don't know whether to be upset or pleased that I did such a good job of carving them that somone would steal them. We had a load of them last night - about 75 at the door. The 5:30 - 7pm ones were the young kids dressed up with the parents loitering at the end of the path. Then as the evening progressed the older teens and even adults (15 to 25 I think!!) just turned up in masks and hoodies and were a little scary to be honest. We just let them take as much as they wanted out of the bowl and shut the door as fast as possible.

I would move. Ok I know that it isn't possible to just up and move but it is insane to just ban a holiday because of some brats. I am 27 and when I was growing up kids were toilet papering houses, cars, etc. It is supposed to be a harmless prank kids pulled when they were being stupid kids. Not today though, kids are starting to do things that actually cause injury to people and cause major damage to the peoples property. Where are the parents to these kids. Back when I was a kid and it was done it was wrong yes but no one got hurt or caused the damages. Kids were punished for things. Not the kids today. They are allowed to do this. What needed to be done in your town is not ban Halloween but put out more patrol cars to catch the idiots doing that. I would go to a different town from now on to take my kids trick or treating.

Halloween used to be about trick or treating, apple bobbing and such games. I used to love dressing up and going round with my family... and that is where the problem is:
Families don't do anything together any more.
Where i live I'm surrounded by these little brats who i never see with an adult and constantly harass US for things! Halloween they come trick or treating but insist on MONEY instead of sweets! Cheek! Then comes Bonfire Night where "PENNY for the guy" has been replaced with "MONEY for the guy". Oh and then Christmas the same kids come round carolling (really badly) and say you have to give them money now because they've sung for you even when you didn't ask them to!
My parents would've cuffed me round the ear if i spoke to an adult like they do. But then you can't do that now...

I think these idiots spoil it for the rest of the kids. I dont open my door to trick and treaters anymore but I used to get sweets and treats in specially for them but with all the yobs going round I don't bother anymore which is a shame.

The chaos aspect of Halloween is all about the "other" world coming into ours and turning everything upside down for the night, hence the trick or treaters dressed as otherworldly characters knocking on your door. It's an old tradition of the spirits of the dead contacting their living ancestors on this night and asking for a tribute from them, now it's chocolate and so on. Luckily, it's only for one night and it's over now for another year.

Not interested in Halloween anymore. I made up little bags of sweets for the trick or treaters and waited expectantly for them to call but they avoided my house...too scared.

The minority always ruin it. BTW in the 80s we used to throw rotten eggs from the back of the supermarket so it's not that new.
It should be banned anyway, like Christmas. Bah Humbug.

it gets even worse....they actually cut trick or treating short because there were reports of people riding around in cars with guns and there were two separate incidences of shots fired...and just so you know, i live in a quiet little suburb in western new york (not a big city)
