It's caused by a bacteria getting into the urethra and making it's way up he urinary tract. It's cause by many things including not cleaning properly. It's can also be caused by sex, that's why it's always a good idea to urinate after sex. You could have also taken an antibiotic that caused the UTI, that's a pretty common way.

Cranberry juice can also help clear this up, also avoid products that have perfumes and dyes that may come in contact with the area (toilet paper, bath products, laundry detergents) as you may have a hyper-sensitivity to them.

As others have said, pay close attention to how much water you are drinking. I always have trouble keeping my intake up this time of year as it gets cooler.

The fact that you and your daughter have a UTI at the same time could be connected, but I think the cat's involvement is just a fluke! :-)

Something in the food, more like.

Cats gets uti's from dry cat food, so I would recommend that you give her some tinned food once in a while. They also get it if they've been feeling poorly and are just not getting enought liquids- that can be counteracted by giving her some hydrolite fluid..

As for your daughter and you - have either of you been on antibiotics recently? They kill off good as well as bad bacteria, so there's an easy chance of getting it. Other culprits include not enough water in the diet, too much citrus fruit & acid causing fruit like pineapples, (Which actually become alcaline in the body and cause a growth of bacteria which leads to UTI's)..and strangely enough not enough fibre in the diet. So my suggestion would be up the water intake and keep it up'ped.. and for a short while, although if possible you should aim for 5 to 8 cups of water - either in tea or plain. An easy way to get it in is to half and half water and fruit juice - it's much more palatable.

Good luck.
