First, I'm sad that you're hurting. I do know how much it can hurt. Know that you're not alone in feeling this.
I think that all of us who have truely enjoyed the love of a pet know exactly what you're going through and would never question or belittle it. On the other hand, we have also known the love and joy that a companion animal can bring to our lives. I,at least, believe that this good far outweighs the pain of loss. I hope this was true of you as well.
As for those who don't get it, what can I say? Maybe they've never had what we've had. Maybe they've never known the love an animal can show. I feel that's their loss. I hope that someday, they get to experience it.
I hope that you don't let comments from people who don't understand hurt you further. Just know that there are millions of us out there who know you're hurting, who know why, and who know that, if you wish, you'll have that wonderful kind of love and joy back in your life again someday.

We live in a society where some people have no compassion over the death of a child and you wonder how there are people with no compassion over the death of a pet?
If a person has never owned a pet, they would have no basis for comparison. You cannot have empathy in a situation that it totally alien for you. However, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that if someone is obviously broken hearted over the death of their pet, it's not a good idea to make statements like "so what....". That's just common sense.
To be a responsible pet owner, you have to acknowledge that there are times when it is necessary to put an animal down. There are some situations in which it would just be cruel not to. That doesn't mean that the owner is heartless. Actually it takes courage, to admit that you can love it enough to stop it's suffering.
You've obviously lost a pet recently and I'm sorry that you've been confronted with people who have no compassion for your situation.

I was raised on a farm, so I learned those hard lessons very young. Like, don't name the lambs...but I am very tender-hearted towards animals, so I don't live that life anymore, my heart just can't take it. Some people have to harden their heart because that is how their families earn their living; butchers, cattle ranchers, etc. But to just callously have a domesticated animal, a pet, put down without feeling.....well, that I just don't understand, and don't think I want to, as it would take a mentality alien to my own. The only case it would be appropriate is if the animal were suffering, because we are the caretakers of this earth and all that's on it, and it is not right to let a defenseless animal suffer.

it is sad to see that still to this day, some people just see pets as property. They don't look at them as a part of their family or even as a friend that can bring them comfort. It is not seen as much today but some people just see them as object not caring what happens to the dog and or cat. This not only goes for the value of their life but also towards giving them the proper vaccines and health care that they need. Working in a veterinary hospital I am glad to say that in my area this is very rare. 99 percent of the clients bringing pets in to be humanly euthanized has agonized over the decision and have done everything possible to get the dog well. While some have not changed their attitudes of those in the past most owners feel that the pet is a part of the family and almost in every case just like one of their children..

Some people deal with a lot of death in thier lifetime. I, for one, have had this experience in my life. When you lose so many people(especially when in your younger years) or pets, you deal with it differently every time it comes back around again than most people would. It doesn't mean it doesn't hurt them. They just deal with it differently. Some people love thier animals, they just don't LOVE them. They ingrain it in thier minds that this animal, while still a member of my family, is going to die long before me, so there's no use in crying about it when it happens. Just enjoy the time I've got with 'em. Oh. Before I forget. In case you've forgotten, Jimminey Cricket sang a song quite a few years back called "The Human Animal." We aren't any higher than animals, just way up there on the food chain. We really aren't any better than locusts. We are collectively killing the only thing that sustains us.

Some times it is better to put an animal down if they are suffering! Some people are so rude to only care about their own pets and if something happens to one of their pets then they are so sad-on the other hand if it is your pet they think-so what? We need to try to care for all the animals we can the best we can!

Likely, those people have never owned a pet & lost it or never formed a bond/attachment to an animal.
