"Catcher in the Rye" by Salinger was superb. I then went on to read all his other books and they were as good. They probably don't technically fall under "classic" category the way Jane Austen or Charles Dickens do but to me they are. I am ashamed to admit that I have never read anything by Charles Dickens. I can't give any reason either. Right now I'm off work and looking for something really good to read and will probably go to Barnes and Noble to pick up "Great Expectations". My exhusband used to read that alot.

Of course "classic" means different things to different people. The first two that pop into my head are "1984" and "Catch 22".

Only slightly down the list are "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls". "Les Miserables", "Moby Dick" and "The Brothers Karamazov" are also brilliant, but are hard work.

For sure Jane Austen, how can you not love the romance (not to mention description) in Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park? I know nowadays they may seem long and wordy, but really to embrace our future, we must understand our past. (sob! :) )
