The sensors at the top detect motion, not light. I have just done a course on Lighting and Guarding, and the idea is there is a timer to change them, but the motion sensor over rides this if no traffic is moving through the green light but traffic is waiting at the red light. This applies only to temporary traffic lights. Normal ones do have sensors in the road sometimes.

Some traffic lights, usually on quiet remote roads, do have a detection element that when it detects headlights will change the light from red to green if it doesn't detect headlights at the other side of the junction.
It's always worth a try !!

I was always led to believe that temporary traffic lights (that are light sensitive) may change quicker. But never been sure how true it was.

I think you are referring to the traffic lights which have sensors to detect the strobe lights of fire trucks...they are used very infrequently and no you couldn't switch your headlights on and off fast enough to be recognized as a strobe light.

Not any more. They used to because they where designed so that flashing lights were asummed to be the blue lights of the emergency services and they'd change to get them through - but they've stopped doing it now, sorry.

It depends on if they change if the traffic builds up on the side tht has stopped.I have tried this at a junction near me and yes it does work.Well i did for me.

absolutely, stand on the horn as well.
Aren't you supposed to be in school or something ?
It woudl require feedback adn sensors, most lights don't have these and why would they be designed to respond to YOUR ights, wouldn't everyone be flashing lights at every red light.
temp lights can have a sensor on them, it not normally connected.
