Some washers, granted....some, have a filter in them, built-in. So look in your book you got with the washer or call the manugacture.
If it's a Maytag or another well known brand name they'll give you all the help you want.
The only other thing I can think of, it's not the washer itself but, the area it's on-in. It may be generating from under the washer or around it, look. Use Lysol spray, move the washer and clean really good around it too.
I had a mouse crawl up into the motor and die, you want to smell something really bad???

I'm not sure where you live but, here in the U.S. washing machines took a big turn for the worse about 10 years ago. Chinese outsourcing and governmental "HE" water usage restrictions dealt a serious blow to washing machines lifespan and abililty to get clothes clean. The only washer that I know of that still retains quality construction and uses enough water to actually clean the clothes is Speed Queen. The reviews on Amazon speak the truth and match my experience exactly. There may be other machines out there but, if you think you can stroll into an appliance store after reading CONsumer reports and purchase whatever is sitting there you may be in for a big dissappointment.

Is it a front load machine?
These can grow mold around the seal (boot) and smell bad.
If this is the case replace the machine.
The repair is very expensive and the smell comes back.
Try white vinegar. Clean the tub with it and soak it for 8 hours. then run with no clothes and hot water.

run a load of water with amonia and hot water through the washer as if it was doing a load of laundry, do the complete cycle with rinse and all, you should also leave the door OPEN when you finish doing laundry to keep it from getting that musty smell

Doing one or two washing cycles with just water and lemon juice (no soap) might help. Lemon juice is very good for removing bad smells.

I think it would be a nice trick to use downy sample. It helps soften the fabric. Just remember to add enough solution on your laundry. Or, check out this site http://www.upkb.com/downysample.php for more tips and info.

MINE WAS DOING THIS TOO, I THOROUGHLY WASHED OUT THE SOAP DISPENSING DRAW AND THEN LEFT THE DOOR OF THE MACHINE OPEN OVERNIGHT FOR A FEW NIGHTS TO LET THE MACHINE GET AIRED PROPERLY.
