One day there may be a price to that independence that you may not want to pay. The birth rates for male children has dropped by 25% in the last 30 years, to the point now where jobs only men are willing to do, such as sewer work. We had a conference of social historians. They spoke of the possibility that in another 10 years, women may have to be forced to take jobs formally done by men, starting with women in prisons, than working outward. If the male birth rate doesn't recover, in 20 years, we may see the emergence of a female sub-class.

Same reason that some people are threatened by same sex marriage. Somehow they think it takes something away from them, they don't understand what they are talking about, and they are willing to make complete fools of themselves sticking to it.
