In the book the lead caracter is a girl who is a witch but also a private detective. She care's for a teenage witch but it isnt her daughter and i think her partner in the book was called Lucas???

Sounds like Dime Store Magic by Kelley Armstrong, where Paige Winterbourne is a Witch taking care of an adopted teenage daughter Savannah. The guy you mentioned would be a Sorcerer called Lucas Cortez.
