The best gifts from abroad have some (though not necessarily all of) the following qualities:

* Specific and unique to the region where they are purchased

* Tasteful

* Surprising or different ("I've never seen such a thing.")

* Useful in everyday life

* Consumable

The last two are important for people who hate knick-knacks and hording. They want something that they can use rather than simply put on a shelf. Consumable items are thus good for them, but they don't last, so some people might prefer useful things that last.

When I was in Chinatown in Portland, Oregon, I purchased a silk tie with Pandas on it. It was the perfect gift . . . it was made in China, it was made of Chinese silk (for which China is famous), its design was emblematically Chinese (pandas!), and it was beautiful . . . very classy tie.

I think that items like this would be great.

Tea ware is nice, too. I saw lovely tea sets.

Also, East Asian dresses are becoming very fashionable, at least on the East Coast (USA). I think that women would really like these, especially if they had them made for taller and larger women (especially fat American women!).

Also, Americans and Brits are crazy about their pets, so anything that was geared to or about dogs and cats would have a certain market.

Earrings are the ever popular last-resort gift for women, since they are so varied and because women tend to buy and wear so many sets. I think that gold and silver earrings in the shape of Chinese script letters that meant certain positive things (health, beauty, happiness, and so on) would be extremely popular. Make sure to translate the meanings for your customers . . . and it is nice to have them on the package itself, even if on a sticker . . . so the gift recipient knows. Like I said above, China is becoming very chic in the American mind. Chinese films and Chinese styles are becoming more and more popular, and this will only increase as we approach the Olympic Games.

I hope that this helps. Good luck.

Whenever I went abroad I always tried to buy things that I couldn't get at home, for example unusual toys for the kids or some jewellery
that's just a little different.

Do you sell silk garments? They would be a favourite for me and some porcelain or china.

Special Tree ornaments to give to people i love. They would have to be light though so my baggage wouldn't be too heavy.
