Paraffin is actually a word meaning low affinity. It is usually applied to saturated hydrocarbons. These have the chemical formula CnH2n+2 where n is any number. Paraffins can be gaseous like methane, a thin liquid like hexane, a thick or viscous liquid like medicinal paraffin, a jelly like "Vaseline" or a solid like candle wax. It just depends on the number of carbon atoms, how they are arranged and what is in the mixture since these are rarely pure in commercial form.

"Kerosene" is the word used in Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. In the United Kingdom the same stuff is called "paraffin" and by other names in other countries.

Lamp oil is formulated for burning in wick lamps, lanterns and some pressure lamps. It is very similar to kerosene except that most of the impurities that create the kerosene smell have been refined out of it. It will burn without producing soot in a properly adjusted lamp, but so will kerosene, If the lamp is not properly adjusted it will produce smoke with lamp oil too. See these two sites for a lot more information on oil lamps and various names for kerosene.

I see your difficulty - no help from Google or Wikipedia! Paraffins are a whole family of hydrogarbons called alkanes. Liquid paraffin (mineral oil in the US) is a mixture of several liquid alkanes and should be colourless and have no strong odour.

However, kerosene contains lots of other non-alkane compounds, in something like the proportions shown below:

Paraffins 50.5

Naphthenes 30.9

Aromatics 18.6

Definitely NOT to be drunk!

Liquid paraffin has a number of names, including nujol, mineral spirits, adepsine oil, alboline, glymol, liquid paraffin, medicinal paraffin, saxol, or USP mineral oil. It is often used in infrared spectroscopy, as it has a relatively uncomplicated IR spectrum. When the sample to be tested is made into a mull (a very thick solution), liquid paraffin is added so it can be spread on the disks to be tested. Liquid paraffin is also excellent for helping bowel movement in persons suffering chronic constipation.
