If there is a hand written inscription on the first page of a book, does a book retain its value better to leave it as is, or is it better to neatly cut the page out of the book as if it were never there?

Never cut a page out of a book! It's extremely obvious when a page is removed. Obviously the most valued books are those that have never seen a pen or pencil, but some ink shouldn't detract from the value. A missing page - however removed - would.

It's best to leave the inscription alone. It gives collectors information they might want to know like who first bought the book and where it was bought. Pages also have small little printing marks that are almost invisible so the printer would know if any pages were missing and collectors use these marks for the same reason -- to see if any pages have fallen out. Collectors also feel that an inscription gives the book character.

the second you take a pair of scissors to the book it will lose at least seventyfive percent of its value, the inscription personalizes the book if the person who wrote the dedication was well known,so much the better the face value of the book could increase. LF

Mate, I'm not sure. But I do know - for sure i my case - that the book I have - an antique Bible, for instance, there is no way I would take the page out! It authenticates it, dates it and if you took the page out (silly) you would NOT have a valuable book.
