I agree that referee's spoil the match as much as players.
In this age of football we see players fall over at a touch yet if we watch rugby we see players dived upon pushed grabbed with just about everything possible done to stop them running and they still continue.
Do footballers have a greater centre of gravity than everyone else? Is the earths gravitational pull selective with a bias toward footballers? I think they ruin a game and I think that to be paid that amount of money they should be good enough to be able to stay on their feet, retrieve balls when they have lost it to other players and be professional enough to win the game without stomping on other players suffering form gravitation.

Its not the referees that spoil the match but the constant moaning and complaining from managers and players alike. Also it doesn't make their job any easier when you have got the likes of Didier Drogba (who is a very good striker) who fall over at the slightest of touches.
I'm not totally against TV replays but then wheres the excitement in the game. You wouldn't need a referee any more. There would be nothing to talk about after the game had finished as it would have been perfect. Can you imagine the boredom of not being able to talk about Graham Poll's 3 yellow cards and then a red card incident. Imagine all the time it would take

I think players can appeal against cards they've received during a game, but you couldn't really change the result of a game after it has been played.
Taking the whole issue to an extreme, you could get video refs for every tackle/challenge, but then the game would stop every 5 seconds and it would no longer be a great spectator sport.
My suggestion (to stop players diving or trying to get other players booked/sent off) is to have a team of officials who can watch the whole match after it has been played. If they decide that a player is guilty of diving or deliberately kicking another player etc. then that player gets banned for so many games.
Now that all the games in the professional leagues are recorded they could randomly select some games to go through. I think as players got banned they would realise that if they dive or deliberately break the rules they may well be found out and punished. Hopefully this would stop the players cheating and make them more 'honest'.

I bet they fouled Carmelo out because Ron Artest lost weight and would be unstable when standing!!!If Carmelo was there, they would have won. But nothing we could do about it. Just imagine if we had a protesting group outside the ref's house..... Kobe is going down people. He's still good though. You call 3-17 FG% on a vs. Nuggets game Kobe style! He got 8 of his 14 points that game on 8-8 free throws!!!Lamar Odom did most of the work and he ain't going to stay like that for the rest of the season!! Laker=not 2010 champions. I'm not a hater!!! I don't think Nuggets are either. I would say Cavs (don't like or hate them) or Mavs. Lakers foul too much too. One more thing Denver Nuggets record vs. the Lakers: 2-1 Lakers vs. Nuggets this season:1-2

In Rugby Union the referees have a little more leeway with computer replays, assistant referees and advantage rules. Rugby Union players are generally more disciplined than footballers.
Nice saying: "Football is a gentlemans game played by hooligans, Rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen!"
When a rugby referee penalises a player he calls both him and his captain and tells both of them. Only the captain can talk to the ref (officially) and all the players call the ref Sir (not w@nker or any other abusive language).
Football referees have a tough job only because the players are yobs! I am a qualified football referee and i ref under 18's down to under 12's and i get more abuse from the parents than the kids.

No.
Referees were around for as long as the game has been. There are outstanding ones, like Pierluigi Collina who are widely respected, and the average ones who are somewhat prone to erroneous judgement.
Their job is to keep the game going smoothly and its never easy to be everywhere and when tensions run high.
It just doesn't work to go and stop the game every once in a while just to review video evidence. It breaks the players' momentum. That'll spoil the game even more.
Everyone makes mistakes once in a while, so i think its unfair to denounce all referees for that matter. They deserve more credit than the flak that they get for an already thankless job.

It takes less time to watch a replay of an incident than it does for the players to go and argue with the ref, if they used TV monitors to help with decissions where by the ref gets it right and does not award a free kick or penalty for cheating and diving, then maybe the refs would get more respect from the players

why is it footballers argue ,swear at the referee , and blatantly dive and roll around after a tackle ? look at the Chelsea v Barca last night Barca players surrounded the ref trying to influence his decisions Wayne Rooney is a prime example seen on national TV swearing at he ref and too his face nothing done what does this show the young players that are playing football that's it's OK to swear at the ref that's wrong and should be stamped OUT OF FOOTBALL TOTALLY don't see rugby players doing it do you rugby players play with broken noses etc , but don't argue with the ref don't question his decisions weather they be right or wrong they just take it and get on with the game yes the rugby ref has the choice of TV replay's which i think football could do with but it will make the game longer but if it improves, helps the decisions then lets have it we must trial it at games to see if it can work and quickly

Referees are capable of spoiling matches, but usually it is the undisciplined behaviour of the players that spoil a football match. Play to the rules of the game and there should not be a problem.

If we didnt have bad decsions by referees what would we get mad about and talk about? Though replays for game altering decsions would be good but I feel it might upset the game as we know it and love it.
They do overturn some decisions after a game, like cards that have resulted in match bans etc...
