Independence was stated in the declaration in 1776. Lincoln's emancipation proclamation ended slavery, I do not know when Congress ratified it. In April,1865 at the civil wars end, slavery ended for the south, however the northern states were allowed to hold slaves in a trade off for their participation in the war effort, so approximately 1866; Maryland and Pennsylvania in particular. A few years after the Jamestown Virginia settlement in 1607, around 1615 slaves were imported, so it lasted approximately 250 years on American soil. It declared its independence in 1775, which was recognized by Britain in about 1781. In 1862, President Lincoln declared that from the 1.1.1863 all slaves in rebel territory would be considered as free people. I think that in 1865, as the Civil War ended, remaining slaves were declared as free people.
