Sriperumbudur is a panchayat town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It located in proximity to Chennai, is a town in the Kanchipuram district of Tamilnadu, India. On 21st May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi, the then former Prime Minister of India was assassinated by a human bomb in Sriperumbudur. Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering is located near Sriperumbudur. It is the birth place of Sri Ramanuja , one of the most prominent Hindu Vaishnava saints. There is now a temple of Lord Vishnu at his birthplace.
Sriperumbudur has been an attraction for major electronic and hardware manufacturing companies as they have started setting up shops in the past few months. It all began with Nokia, the Finnish telecom major setting up a Telecom SEZ, first of its kind in the country at a cost of $ 100 million, along with all of its major suppliers. The unit has already begun production, and the company plans to pump-in another $ 150 million into the project. Following suit was the US-based Flextronics, which offers electronic manufacturing services (EMS), committing $ 100 million, for an industrial park, which would manufacture telecom equipments including handsets.
Recent entrants include Taiwan-based Honhai-Foxconn - the world's second largest EMS manufacturer - and US-based Motorola (for making handsets). It all began with Nokia and Flextronics, leading to a naturally created manufacturing hub for electronics, which then pulled in other companies.
Sriperumbudur is strategically placed on the Chennai-Bangalore highway, just about 40 kilometers from the main city, and offers all that the international giants want to get their business running in the country. Industrial infrastructure facilities are being constructed while the companies are in the process of setting up their units. With good highways and infrastructure and not being too far from a major metropolis (Chennai), Sriperumbudur offers all the facilities that these companies want. Sriperumbudur is already becoming a strong case for being developed into a satellite township.
