The language known as Java started off as a programming language for set-top-boxes. During its development stages it was called Oak - after the tree outside of James Gosling's office (Gosling was the developer of the Oak language). Sun Microsystems didn't like the name Oak, and so instructed Gosling to come up with a better name for the language. Sitting in a coffee bar with some colleagues sipping their coffee, they tossed ideas for names back and forth, until they reached and decided on the word Java.

In the US, a cup of coffee is also known as a cup of Java - after the java beans used to make the coffee (for example: http://www.anothercoffee.co.uk/products/item500107.aspx ). And the word Java derives from the island of Java - one source of coffee beans.
