...about Bush's administration and what he's doing to the US's reputation. How can a country who owns something like Guantanamo Bay be considered "democratic"? Again I truly feel Bush is on one end of the spectrum and the US is on the other.

I feel very angry about what Bush has done to our reputation around the world. It is something that really concerns me. But, and this is a big but, I believe you are wrong about the American people and our government. The American people ARE the government, in a very real sense. We elect and we reject. We are free to speak out and criticize our government and our President if we feel they are screwing up, and thankfully can effect change fairly easily compared to most governments. You can see from our polls (yes, polls are notorious but when they all agree it's good to pay attention to them) that the majority of the American people do not approve of the job that Bush is doing. We can support our troops and still be unhappy about the reasons they are there.

We will change the tide by voting, it is our most precious freedom, IMO. Apathy keeps many Americans at home during the mid-term elections, but I feel this time around we will see a big surge at the polls in the Democratic favor. I have to say, as unhappy as I am with the Bush Administration, I bristled when I read your opening statement. It just isn't true, we are the sum of all of our parts in this democratic republic. We will continue to respond harshly to terrorists and their threats, whether our government is headed by a Republican or a Democrat. Guantanomo Bay? It's unfortunate and there's house cleaning to be done, but we have a right to detain those who are a threat to our national security. We learned on 9/11 what it means to remain complacent and have a false sense of security. We won't make that mistake again.

The government is the people of the USA. George Bush was put in office by the majority of the people in the USA. That makes the US government the people of the US.

People complain about their government all the time and are not willing to do anything to change it. They are the very same people that put Bush and the others in the government.

It is not possible to seperate the government from the people. The government of the US does reflect the attitude of the people of the US.

Even as bad as some think the US is most other nations have governments that are extremely curropt and keep their people as poor as they can. Poor and uneducated people are easier to control.

Some governments use religion to brain wash the people and instill hatred and fear in them to control them.

Yes the US has a lot to think about and hopefully change. Even with all the bad things people hear about the US there is one fact that still exists and there is a reason for it. There are far more people going to Embaseys of the US wanting to go to the States to live than to any other place on this planet.

Opertunity is the key word and that is waht the US does offer to all.

Take a good look at your own government. I mean a good look. Most likely you are not allowed to see very much and if you try you will be given the choice of stop or go to prison.

You may live in one of the European nations that appear very democratic and seem to never have problems.
Again take a good look and you wll see not all is as you think it is.

There is no government that is totaly democratic and fair to all peoples.

Nations are a process of learning and changing all the time. They all make mistakes from time to time. Some deny theitr past but at the same time say they have a long cultural haritage. Kind of like having your cake and eating it at the same time.

If anyone can come up with the answers that would provide for people to live in peace all over the planet that person would be hailed as the greatest person that ever lived.
No it will not come from any religious teachings. That only makes for more hatred and discord.

I personally don't care about our reputation. The main problem that I have with our government is that holding public office has become a career, not a public service. It is supposed to be "for the people, by the people", but has become "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine", corrupt. As far as Guantanamo Bay goes, what would you do with people that want to kill you, let them go and say "Have a nice day"? These people get a clean place to stay and are treated with respect that they don't deserve. What do you think "democratic" is? If you go with the vote of the majority (rule of the mob), the individuals rights are lost, if you try to serve every individual (everyone wants something different) you will never be able to do anything. We have a balance of both. If all else fails we have the right to remove the government (thank our founders for the right to bare arms).

It is a camp for prisoners taken off a battle field. Most of their home countries do not want them returned and some would do horrible things to them. They are treated better than U.S. citizens who are in prison for lessor crimes.
We had a bit of an upset when this Supreme Court decided we could not treat them in the manner we have treated enemy combatants in the past.New legislation was required to begin military tribunals so we could begin dealing with them.
The government is a reflection of the people as we vote for our representatives. Some liberals will deny this because there faction lost the election but that is not the true American way.I can not speak for the entire country but the only problem half of the country has with the presidents prosecution of the war is that he should have completely subdued Iraq before ever trying to set up elections for their government. Now we must try to work through them as much as possible instead of just killing Al-Sadr and his militia.

I am American, I love my country, I hate the Bush regime. I think he is a greedy money hungry &$*#@. I wish people of other countries realized that the majority of the American people are good people.. Really, the current state of my country makes it scary as h*ll to be a mother. I pray the day never comes where Bush is safely tucked away in a bunker while the people of his country are being blown away, because he pissed off the world. Thank God he is out of here in a couple years.

As and American i feel this Government is giving us the shaft.
Republicans mainly care for big business and the rich and let religion base too many of their policies.
And most of the democrats are sniveling hippies.

This country is going down the crapper fast.

I think it's pretty obvious by Bush and his administrations approval rating what the majority of Americans think of him..

Every country in every war in history has had prisoner of war camps. EVERY country. The only thing different about the US is that we are not killing the prisoners as the Muslims are doing. Why don't you spout your rhetoric at the countries and people that execute all their prisoners, blow up schools, drop motor rounds on voting facilities, and shoot police stations apart? As far as Gitmo is concerned alot of Americans (like me) feel like if they don't wear a uniform they don't deserve POW status and we should just shoot them. Or maybe we should saw off their heads slowly while they scream and tape it, so we can show it on the Internet like Al Queda does.
