We propose building a large dating website. Can anyone tell me what language we should have the programmers write it in, so that it is most effective AND most importantly Future proof. We are new to this, and are more marketing focused. I would really appreciate any advice on what to avoid? What sort of company do we need to ask about doing this project for us?( I.e Web designers or programmers?) And any general advice or pointers would be gratefully accepted , as I am not a computer orientated person.

To be honest, the language is more or less irrelevant - any modern language will be able to support any of the features you want. it's much more important to make sure you have a defined set of requirements for your site, and that you are confident of the developers' ability. To a certain extent, the choice of language may be determined by your choice of developers - if the company you are most impressed by (and offer the best deal) have expertise in a certain language, that should be the one to go for.

If you're really concerned about the language, options include ASP.NET, which is Microsoft's product and therefore unlikely to go away any time soon; or open source alternatives like PHP, or one of the newer web frameworks like Django (based on Python) or Ruby on Rails, which is getting a lot of publicity at the moment.

Ask a web design company they will advise you on what langauge they will use dependant on what you are trying to acheive from the site

It may be a mixture of Html with some Java, perl and SQL. They may use a design program such as Front page or Dreamweaver and add to it.
The main thing is you have a clear idea in your mind what you are trying to do with the site and how you want it to look and convey that to them

Contact a few web designers/progammers and tell them the basics of what you are looking for. Let them recommend the best way and give you offers.

ColdFusion MX 7 and combine it with Flex 2. Flex 2 allows you to write Flash applications without knowing any Flash at all. I am a web developer myself and own a web development company. Please contact me if you want to do it for you.

HTML and CSS definitely. Javascript/AJAX pretty much definitely too. PHP is popular but by no means universal for the backend. Ruby and Python are pretty common choices. (OkCupid is written in C++ because they're kinda weird.)

Your programmers should be able to answer the question better than anyone.
