The clutch pedal sometimes has a lot of free travel before disengaging. Mainly noticed in the morning, but later in the day after some use, it returns to normal !! Does this suggest a fault in the master or slave cylinder ? Would bleeding help?
Does the master cyl share the brake fluid reservoir ? The last car I had with a hydraulic clutch was a Hillman Imp, which never showed this type of fault.

My colleague (another driving instructor) has also noticed this on his Corsa. Of course, the warranty has just expired .
Thanks for any ideas

Yes bleeding will help. Take a clear hose and put it on the slave cylinder bleed screw. Dip the other end in a can 1/2 full of brake fluid. Open the bleed screw and have someone pump the clutch pedal a few times. Check the clutch master cyl often and make sure the fluid doesn't run completely out. Keep doing this till you see no air bubbles in the clear tube. Just fluid. Tighten up the bleed screw and top off the clutch master cylinder. This should fix it...Unless you have a slave cylinder going bad.

Some older Astra's had the same problem, i believe it was due to water getting into the reservoir, try replacing all the fluid in the system, as the water will move down to the slave cylinder you will not be able to see it in the reservoir, and unlike the oil, water is compress able, hence the free movement first thing, until repeated use then the oil and water become mixed.

The brakes and clutch have separate master cylinders

have a look at the master cylinder for leaks in the foot area
have a look for a wet slave cylinder
if all look ok
the hoses for ballooning when pressed and cracks or steel hose leaks
you are sucking air in from somewhere and will get worse over time changing all the fluid will make it worse i know and you will have to fix the problem faster when you do that

to make you feel better
you are meant to change both at the same time and replace all the fluid as this will help lenghten the life blar blar

to save money clamp the fexi hose and press you foot the clutch for and about 2 or 5 minute period and if going down the master f***ed if it hard and doesn't move the slave is f***ed
