Don't put a bucket of water out! (that HUMIDIFIES not DEhumidifies, ie adds moisture to the air instead of taking it out) We have had this problem with condensation etc. Don't dry clothes inside if poss. We bought a dehumidifier from B&Q for £50. It's effective for a 3-bed property and plugs in.

I'm not sure about the bucket of water suggestion(!) But what I would like to know is what do you think is causing the damp? It's all very well getting a dehumidifier but you need to address the source of the problem. If you come back with what you think is the problem then I will be able to give you a better answer.

leave a window open when you are cooking, open the bathroom window when you're finished in the bathroom. Basically increase ventilation to allow warm moist air to escape.
Dehumidifiers work but they are not environmentally friendly. Modern houses are too well sealed and cause condensation by not allowing the damp air to escape. Heat the house properly but in the bathroom and kitchen especially, close the door to stop the damp air getting to the rest of the house, then open the window for 10 minutes. In the morning, before the heating comes on, open all the downstairs windows for 5 minutes to allow fresh dry air in and wet air out. Then close them and turn the heating on.

How did the water get into the house.?
T I P S :- Don't dry clothes in the house. After a shower open window for10 minutes. Fit extractor over stove.Buy automatic kettle. In hot or cold dry weather open windows. Don't keep closing all the doors in the house, let the rooms" breathe".
Make sure you have no water ingress ,either from rising damp or water penetration.

There are airconditioning units that are available either portable or you can have permanently installed that will dehumidify your house.
