Ithink that you'll find that the EEC referendum was 1974.
The vote was 2 -1 to remain in the EEC.......... It never said anything about joining "The EU" though!!!!!

The asker is right about the date of the EEC referendum, but do you mean the circumstances surrounding the votes or the results? In 1997 voters in Scotland *and* Wales both voted in favour of devolution, though the Welsh vote was very close and there were suggestions of campaign violations by Labour to get the result they wanted.

A similar vote had been held in 1978 or 1979 (Scotland voted yes and Wales, no) but the turnout was too low for the results to be considered valid.

In 1998 Londoners voted in favour of having a mayor and an assembly, after 12 years without a London-wide government thanks to the Tories.

The BBC News site will still have old stories about the 1997 and 1998 votes.
