I am from the US but I visit Bangalore on business. I believe that this change is in keeping with going back to the original Indian names of the cities and/or states which were changed under British colonization. For example, Bombay is now Mumbai. Calcutta is now Kolkata. The original name of Bangalore is Bengalooru. I think India has a right to rename their cities and states back to what they once were before colonization.

Most of this "historical" references to the old name are nonsense. They are cooked up stories, and have no written backup. But all know that Bangalore as a place got importance only after British came here, setup base. So we should respect their name (but in case of Delhi, its different, they have right to change the name)
Most of this campaign is done by a few people who are vying for prime space and page 3 in the media, who claim they are "fighting" for the people's cause, without looking into the reality. This name change is not going to do any good, if not anything bad. More expenditure, thats it. Dont be surprised if they want it to be named it Gowdapur or Gowdabad !! Just remember the failed attempt to change the names of towns (frazer town, maciver town etc. ) there is a law against changing the colonial names, u know. If somebody files a PIL with supreme court, all this nonsensw wud fail...

Bangalore, the name used now, is the anglicised form of the "Bengaluru". This name "Bangalore"has an interesting story. Hoysala King Veera Ballala named the place Bendakalooru (Town of Boiled Beans) when he was offered boiled beans by an Old woman during one of his hunting bouts. Another version claims that the name "Bengaluru" has appeared much earlier than the Hoysalas.
The earliest reference to the name is seen in a ninth century Ganga stone inscription (Veeragallu) found in Begur village, about 14 kms south west of Bangalore. This inscription clearly mentions the name "Bengaluru", referring to a battle that was fought at that place. Rao Bahadur R Narasimhachar, in his Mysore Archeological Report (1914-15), dates this inscription to the 9th century AD.
The place was then called "Hale Bengaluru" or Old Bengaluru, where the present Kodigehalli village is located, near the Hebbal Tank. Kempe Gowda I, on building his new town in 1537, called it by this name, as his mother and wife were believed to have belonged to this place.
According to another speculation, the presence of vast stretches of the trees called "Benga" or "Venga" (Raktha honne) in Kannada lent their name to this place. Vengaluru (the place of Venga) became Bengaluru when "Ve" replaced "Be".
Yet another theory says that there was a big forest in this area and Kempegowda I, before building the town is believed to have burnt the forest. So the town built on Benda Kadu (burnt forest) "Benda Kaduru", later becane Bengaduru and finally Bengaluru.
Recenty the name Bangalore was used and misused in many contexts such as :
Bangalored: This is a word originated in America to describe those whose jobs were lost because their work was outsourced to low-cost India. One Web site was selling T-shirts with the slogan "Don't Get Bangalored" as a way of telling people about the issue.
Bang-alore: A few years ago, an IT expert at the technical seminar of IT.com suggested that "Made in Bangalore" should be promoted as a brand. There is "Banga" in Bangalore, he remarked.
Bangal-ore: The Bengali community of Bangalore coined the term "Bangal-ore" and used in their hoardings and publicity material to celebrate their community festival.
Ban-galore: The entry of vehicles were recently banned on many roads as they have been made one-way, paving way for the term "Ban-galore".
BA Galore: British Airways recently knocked out its "n" to announce their direct flights into and out of the City.
With the recent threat by IT professionals and multinationals to leave Bangalore on grounds of poor infrastructual facilities, what do you think will the change in name do to the future of Bangalore ? Do you think that the name change would benefit Bangalore or will it add to the numerous problems of the City ??...........let us know.

Well its good that they rename it as Bengaluru.
They should rename Delhi too because we hate colonial names. They should rename it as Indraprastha may be Dilli, Dehli, Hastinapur or may be Leningrad. We should not call our cities with the colonial names.
It is not good that we call our cities with the name by the British people and I think Americans should understand that they should change their cities and states colonial names. We have our own culture we should name our places with our cultural names.
I love that in Rajasthan most of the places are name in their own origins as like Jaipur and Jodhpur.
If you not rename it then that would be shameful. You let other people to name you cities.

When everyone is doing, why not us. Ha! Ha! Ha!
Calcutta to Kolkata
Bombay to Mumbai
Madras to Chennai.
Well, I can reel-off many more. But I think, this is sufficient.
Latest is Pondicherry to Puducherry.

Kannadigas must somehow show that they OWN Bangalore.
Since they can not show this by their influence, or industry, or culture, hence this easy short cut. Poor chaps !!
