Although he could play as left wing, using an example such as Gerrard playing left wing for England and Liverpool, he would not be playing to his strengths.

He is heavily right footed and would have to cut back to cross with his right. Although he is a capable dribbler of the ball no one wants to waste time moving the ball to your correct foot when you could be tackled whilst doing it.

He also lacks pace and would be ineffective at breaking down the wing.

Finally Lampard is known to have a good shot on goal. Playing down the wing would mean he would have far less chances to do this.

Lampard could be deployed as a left midfielder, but not along the wing. He doesn't have the necessary pace or dribbling skills to take the ball down the wing. And he'd have to cut back onto his right foot to put the crosses in. He wouldn't exactly flop on the left of midfield, but he'd be very, very ineffective.

No way. He hasn't got the game to be versatile. He isn't quick, can't beat a man, doesn't cover a fullback and wouldn't make the runs. Chelsea's style suits him perfectly as pretty much the whole teams play allows him to get forward and score goals. I doubt he'd be that great a central midfielder for another team as they'd be set up differently. Look at him for England... completely ineffective because it all doesn't revolve around his runs into the box.

It is a problem with English players in general... they can't adapt to new positions. We class Gerrard as versatile but look at this performances on the right this season. Average at best. On the continent they do alot of thing poorly (diving, defending) but all their players are technically profficient to play in other positions. Teams regulary play without a striker, with midfielders making runs when required. Defenders will happily play in midfield and vice versa.

The problem is young players are trained poorly at a young age. Emphasis is put on strength work, tackling and set pieces. These are things any donkey can learn whereas abbroad, children are taught about touch, technique, finding space so ultimately their defenders are better on the ball than alot of our midfielders and hence they have trouble changing positions.

Overall... no... Lampard couldn't play as a left winger.
