I have this teacher who teaches a class called Desktop Publishing. He doesn't know what he is teaching. He never seems to treat people fairly and always seems cofused. The students know better than him. He expects all the students to have learnt the class topic without him teaching. I had a quiz today on text in illustrator. There were 2 classes taught on that but i was only present for one of the classes. I failed the quiz...I have never failed in my school life.. I was literally in tears.. He doesn't seem to understand that it is unfair to test one when they were not present for one of the classes... What should i do??? Please help!

It IS fair to test students on material they missed. You're almost an adult now; you have to accept responsibility for your own actions and your own education. You should have a "study buddy" (or two!) in every class who can fill you in on what you miss. I'm not excusing the fact that your teacher comes unprepared and isn't familiar with the subject matter (blame the principal who made him teach the class, not him), but part of growing up is accepting responsibility. And in my opinion, someone who has never failed something in his or her life should be able to guess the answers on a DESKTOP PUBLISHING (this isn't exactly Physics) quiz!

As a student you are responsible for all work missed. That's the bottom line. You need to approach your teacher (s) after any absence and ask about any work that you missed. That said, you should ask this teacher for additional help in understanding the the subject matter that you missed when you were not at class. Explain that you have never failed a test or a quiz before. That you will be more responsible regarding any material that you might have missed, and will be sure to see that teacher as soon as possible after any other absence from class. Chalk this up as a learning experience and go on from there. Good luck.

Well you can see this as a lesson learned. Now you know what failing feels like and you can get angry or try to humbly do something positive about this.

First off, realize that 10 years from now no one will care how you did on this one quiz and get it into perspective - I know this is easier to say than do.

Talk to the teacher (calmly & humbly) and ask how to better prepare for quizzes in general. Also assure him that you realize that you need to get notes and study with others if you miss a class -- ask his recommendation for a student who might take good notes and be able to demonstrate techniques or samples presented in class. Maybe another student with a similar learning style, who is doing well in the classwork can be found.

If you are a good student overall, having desktop publishing skills could have great value to you in future study or work, even lead to a job which could help pay for university. I say this by way of encouraging you not to give up just because of the teacher's style or one bad quiz. I know your pride was hurt, but as a good learner you really can find a way to bounce back if you put effort into this. If the teacher doesn't help you find a tutor or other classmates to work with you, calmly suggest to the deparment head or school counselor that MR. _(teacher)______ does not appear to have time to help you, so could they help you find study partners? The headmaster or principal might not be aware of the situation and this would be one way to ask for help without getting Mr________ angry at you.

I think the only thing you can do is to tell your Mum and Dad and maybe they could speak to the headmaster. Hope you can sort something out.
