Since the people vote in the polls, isnt it like saying we are the stupid ones?

I think my hair stands straight up when I hear anything our Georgie boy says or does. I've been beginning to think that if someone were to say " green " he'd say " red." To think this administration got into office twice, quite literally, makes me shake my head. The war in Iraq was based on lies. I do not condone the vicious brutality of Sadam, but I understand, somewhat, as to why his country was ruled in the manner in which it was; the tribes can't get along! We're stuck in another Vietnam. I'll take my son underground, before I give him up to such a sensless mess.

The President is very correct in what he is saying. Often times, he gets flak for the way he speaks. Yet, the concept behind what was said is flawless.

A poll, by definition, is only a small sample of the American people. If a small number of the American people are given a poll and the results point heavily toward one verdict, that does not necessarily mean that ALL Americans feel that way.

We must remember that a poll is a sample of Americans, not America as a whole.

An easy example would be something like this - A poll is given to Americans throughout Miami concerning illegal immigration into the United States from Central and South America. This poll finds that almost the majority of participants favor relaxed laws and policies when dealing with illegal immigration.

So then, could it be said that Americans are in favor of relaxed immigration laws?

The answer is no.

There is a large number of immigrants from Central and South America in Miami. Since the poll is only done in Miami, the voices and opinions of Americans throughout the fifty states is not heard. Only people who may be more sympathetic to illegal immigrants are heard in this poll.

Now, you might ask "Well, what if the poll had lots of Americans all over the country involved?"

Undoubtedly, this would provide a better sample of the American people than a poll done in one local. Yet, even if 30 million people were polled about illegal immigration laws in the United States, only 10% of Americans are being asked. There is still a whole 90% of America that was not consulted in the poll.

To put this simply - Just because 10% (or some other number) of Americans agree or disagree with an idea, that does not mean their opinion is the same as the American people on a whole.

To say this in a mathematical sort of proof -

90% of Americans polled believe X to be true.
Since 90% of Americans polled believe X, then 90% of American must believe X.

The second statement is false. Sampling the population in no way replaces the actual opinions of the whole population.

The problem is any poll can be slanted, whether it is one for the Democrats or one for the Republicans. You can make statistics say anything you want. It's all how you word the question or present the numbers. Yes, it may be what the people voted, but the data can be skewed. That is one thing we learned in statistics class. Had to do a whole project on the Titanic. Surprising how people can take the same numbers and come to different conclusions.
