Hello dear!
Thousands of years ago, in Athens, having the Dionysus celebrations, they were having "free" conversations and plays, around the city, each one dressed in costumes to be unrecognizable by the rest!
Then, some 27 centuries ago, Thespis, wrote a one actor play and presented it officially before the Demos, the people of Athens. Thus, it was for Dionysus and the people of Athens that was presented. Thespis was to person who created the beginning of the theater, with one actor on the stage.
Later, second and more actors were introduced. Progressively the chorus was introduced and the theater took its recent form, some 25 centuries ago. This is also the time that theaters seating 10,000 - 20,000 - 30,000 people were constructed and used up to today! Further, the contents of those theatrical teachings/ plays are still used today!

While Greek theatre is generally thought of as the original form of theatre, there are other cultures that have a rich theatrical history. Ancient Japan is known for its theatre. Noh and Kabuki (two forms of Japanese theatre) have been performed for centuries. Some Japanese theatre was actually started by prostitues. Woman were allowed to be actors, until a law was made that forbade woman from acting, allowing men to start playing female roles. That custom was also prominent in Greece and even Elizabethan England.
I don't know if there's an official "Beginning" of theatre, but I do know that there is a rich history of theatre all over the world. I hope this helps you on your quest for an answer!

It's vague in my memory but I think it was when the Catholic Priests dressed up and made productions out of there church services to gather members. I think it was a matter of which Priest had the best production; therefore he gained more followers. I don't remember what century it was. My memory? I'm getting too old and it's failing me.
