I'm can't understand why they are asking for your IMEI number. If it is a phone insurance company or your service provider, that makes sense. I would be reluctant to supply it to anyone else.

There is not much they can do with it though, they can't bar your phone because if they reported that IMEI stolen, your service provider will check that they owned the phone (this is to stop your ex boyfriend disabling your phone out of spite)

The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) is a number unique to every GSM and UMTS mobile phone. It is usually found printed on the phone underneath the battery and can also be found by dialling the sequence *#06# into the phone.

The IMEI number is used by the GSM network to identify valid devices and therefore can be used to stop a stolen phone from accessing the network. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to "ban" the phone using its IMEI number. This renders the phone useless, regardless of whether the phone's SIM is changed.

Don't give out your IMEI to any website other than the website for your wireless service provider. I would guard it just as you would your home number.

Hope this helps!
