you may need to assign a drive letter (thus making windows recognise that there is a drive there).

..right click my computers
.. manage
.. storage, disk management
..you'll see your hard disk there
.. assign a letter to it

Make sure the computer sees it in the first place. Go into the BIOS (setup), just watch the boot screen for a "press (something) for setup" or something. Look under (probably the first screen that comes up) devices I think for a list of devices. You should see any HDs or cdroms etc that are connected. If it doesnt see it, check the cables, make sure the jumper is right, try again.

does the bios recognize it ? when starting th computer, enter the bios and look if there is your new hard. if not, then you sould check , if the jumpers are put correctly (in case of parallel ata (IDE hard) ), or it recognized by the sata controller.

if it's there, then format it
