i live in a house with 7 other people and things have been going missing lately, at first i put it down to my own carelessness, but today i just took out £200 to pay rent, it was in my bag which i left in my room. Then i went out to eat my dinner, came back and went to take the money from my bag and its not there. Ive looked around my room, its not there but i know i left it in my bag...but what can i do ,i cant just accuse people, plus they all seem so nice i cant believe one of them would be taking it esp as they all have more money than i do...i really cant afford this right now

It sounds like you either have a bad case of kleptomanic fairies or one of your housemate has taken your money. My money is on the housemates.
The fact that some of them have more money than you is immaterial most people steal because out of greed not need... one of them definitely has more money than you because they have taken it!
Call them all together in one room and tell them what has happened. Give them the chance to put the belongings back within a timeframe (say the next 12 hours) and tell them you will go to the Police if the money isn't returned. Don't be afraid to show your feelings because you are entitled to! If they aren't returned go to the Police. Even if they don't manage to find the culprit it might scare them enough to stop them.
After that get a lock for the door and start looking for another shared house.
I really feel for you, nobody deserves to be treated like you have been.
Good luck x

Is it just Money or is it other things as well, unfortunatley I cant see anyone owning up to taking it if anything the guilty party will start a psycholigical campaign convincing all your other housmates that you are a trouble maker. but there are some measures you can take
No. 1 call a meeting announce that you have had your money stolen and suggest that if it has not been returned to your room or put say on the kitchen table within 2 hrs you will report it to the police and hand your bag over to them so that the police can check for finger prints (after all it is burgulary)
No 2. (and it seems popular) Lock your door and if you cant fit a lock to it,
No 3 buy a cheap web cam and rig it up to your computer and in your room (obviously) making it quite clear that there is one there after all no-one has any reason to be in your room without your permisson anyways,if not to actually record whats going on just as a deterant,
No 4 just to get your own back on untrust worthy house mates bake a nice yummy lookin chocolate cake filled with laxatives and leave it in the fridge dont give any one permission to eat it and when/if one of them sees it and their greed overcomes them you can have a little laugh at their expense,
and if you still cant resolve who the theif is I suggest you look for another place to live, and when you leave as much against your character as it may be dont leave or hand over any money you may owe just leave, dont worry what they might be sayin about you as im sure you will get a few names called at you, leave a note sayin the reason your not leavin any money behind is to compensate for your loss and who ever took the money should pay what you owe, and let it fight them out amongst theirselves. Ive had money stolen from me before around about the same amount and it isnt nice so I wish you luck and hope that in my manic ramblings there is something of use

i have had the same problem....so what i did was, i marked all my notes with my intitials very small on the top right hand corner of the note, i left my purse lying round deliberately and yep...the notes went missing, a day later i asked for some change, like two £10 notes as change from £20....i soon found out who the culprit was and threw him out...money never went missing again, s maybe you should try it, when you find out who it was, then either report him/her to the police or demand the money back....and even get together with the rest of the tenants and decide if this person should be thrown out or not because this person will not be trusted from now on, if i were you i would also keep your money on you, and get a small padlock for your room, never leave it lying round hun, these things happen, dont accuse anyone until you know for certain who it is, but marking the notes is a good one....may i add that if you are going to mark the notes...make sure you have a close friend with you when you do it, just so it's confirmed that it was you who marked them as a trap...you'll find out eventually, but just dont give this person the opportunity to go snooping in your room any more....

You should call a house meeting, have everyone there. Tell them directly that you had the money came home and it is gone. See who looks guilty. Tell them all about your financial situation and how you arent accusing anyone yet, but you want to give the guilty party a chance to make it up and return the money. Perhaps another saw someone in your room. Perhaps someone saw something.Buy a lock for your door and dont leave money around or valuables. I'm sorry this has happened and hope the guilty party confesses.

I support Nedster's suggestions - I would also suggest that you buy some of that indelible ink stuff that only shows up under a fluorescent light .... deliberately leave something out that you know might appeal to the thief .... keep a close eye on it (that might mean leaving your room for a few minutes at a time, but not the house) and as soon as you notice it missing - call a meeting - say it's been stolen and ask everyone to submit to their hands being stroked with the light - the lightfingered one (sorry for the pun!) will soon shine up!!! (Sorry for that one too!)...
Or be found out because they're unwilling to submit their hand ......

Get every one together and tell them all at the same time and tell them all strait what has happened, as soon as possible, because if some one is taking the cash from close friends then there is a serious problem and it will not go away on its own, maybe the person needs help, bad debt, drugs etc.

That's not an easy situation. I had the same thing happen to me many years ago and I handled it badly by accusing the wrong pewson which cost me a friend. Tread carefully. Be sure of the facts is all I can advise and get a good hiding place for your valuables.

if there is a thief on the premises your probably not the only person that has had things go missing call a house meeting find out who is responsible and kick them out if the front door is left unlocked it's possible that it is an opportunist from outside the house but this is less likely than it bieng someone inside the house

Well if you are sure, you have to confront them, best all in one go, and tell them that this theft brings yo on the edge of ruin.with giving the chance that the culprit takes back the money without anybody knowing it. Next thing is to get a lock on your door or move out
