Do you have Protestant tattooed on your head, otherwise how do people know you are of that religion.
These days being a Protestant or Catholic in the Republic of Ireland has absolutely no relevance. Maybe people are looking at you different is because you are different, don't blame your religion. Your harassment isn't definitely nothing to do with your religion or 'énglishness' as most people are busy being racist against immigrant workers from Eastern Europe.

Maybe you just rub people up the wrong way.

I lived in the north for many years then moved to the mainland where i stayed for a lot of years, now ... living inthe south and spme people (Not all of them) tell me i'm different because i lived up north, loved it! No matter how bad things were (Yep the troubles) and i always wondered what they meant until my best friend, her partner and their baby boy (from the north) came to visit! We had a friend staying with us at the time and he told me that i resembled my friend, from our eyes, not only that but demeanour, way we talked to each other etc. I asked him what he meant by that and all he would say was! "You're not like us" I told him it was just as well because 1. he's a man (We're women) 2! Because it would be boring if we are all the same so vive la difference! So we joke about it for a while, then forget about it!

First of all, learn how to spell 'Protestant'... Where in Ireland are you from/where do you live? I've known plenty of Protestants (and, actually, lots of English people) and I would regard none of them as any less a person or any less Irish than myself. I find it really hard to believe what you're saying, actually, unless you're from the one tiny country town caught in a time-warp where it's still 1916, or being over-sensitive. I have Protestant best mates, Protestant (and English) in-laws whom I regard as family, and I always find that English people are nicer and more mannerly than the Irish. And I'm Irish, of course, and living in Dublin (but from Wexford originally). I'm sorry to hear you've been suffering this way, but I really think if you just moved somewhere else it would change. I've never known anyone to discriminate against someone for being a Protestant. And if this question is a joke, I don't think it's particularly funny.

I think things have moved on. But do know what you are saying. BUT maybe you are being too sensitive also........the south is a good place with good people who will take people as they find them. The religious thing doesnot carry so much weight....but you also have to remember that in any culture past hurts take a long long time to disappear completely. Just be you.
