i was EXTREMELY confused because they didnt die in the church so how did they die? I'm assuming they are dead cause the father can't see them!!!??? Someone said they are trapped in the silent hill "world" but how can they be trapped if they defeated the mystery of silent hill?

I agree with xaopan.

I believe the movie depicts them to be trapped in what I would call limbo. If you can believe the concept that a spirit will not move on unless it acknowledges the fact that it is dead then you would recall Rosie making a phone call to Chris informing him that they were coming home. That to me suggests that she doesn't realise she is dead. When he answers he hears nothing but static.

I would agree with your answer Zholla, to some extent. Though I commend the person for the detailed answer which I thought was awesome, they had failed to explain a few things.
I claim they are dead on the basis of the car accident that Sharon and Rose had. What supports this is the motorcycle accident the Policewoman Cybil had. The reason Cybils spirit didn't pass on was because of Cybils determination to save Sharon from her Mother as she had previously saved a child that had been thrown down a well in Silent Hill by his Father. You will hear that story being bought up in a conversation between Rose's Husband (Chris) and Officer Thomas Gucci. The bodies are not found at the scene because upon death they ended up being subjected to the towns cursed fate.
I believe Roses spirit was resurrected when she was stabbed by Christabella. This was only because The Darkness had possesed her body before she went into the Church.
I have a little more conflicting details with that synopsis but then again it's all about perception. *gives zholla a thumbs up* too

Actually Sugr if you listen to the conversation that Dark Alessa has with Rose...when she makes the deal with Rose..even she says that the spirits in the Church refuse to believe that they are dead.

Contrary to popular belief, no, Rose and Sharon are not dead. They're just still trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension. Here's what happened:

There are three parts of Alessa:

- Alessa (the original body)

- Good Alessa (Sharon)

- Dark Alessa ("The Demon")

Sharon and Dark Alessa are basically physical manifestations of the two sides of Alessa - the good side and the evil side. As for how Alessa created these physical manifestations (and the alternate dimensions), it can only be assumed that she possessed some kind of supernatural power (possibly telekinetic and/or psionic powers, which would obviously lead everyone associated with the cult to call her a witch). Assuming this is true, the ending goes as follows:

1) Dark Alessa (aka - "The Demon") does not, in fact, take over or possess Sharon. Dark Alessa simply recombines with Good Alessa (Sharon), creating a new "reincarnated" Alessa.

2) Alessa's deal with her evil counterpart is not simply that she will help her exact her revenge, but that she will also be granted a new life with a better mother: Rose.

3) In this case, ending has two possibilities:

a.) Alessa's plan works and she is granted a new mother in Rose. However, because Alessa was motivated by hate and revenge and let her evil side take over (as well as Rose's part in the revenge), Rose and Sharon (Alessa #2) are doomed to live in the purgatory-like realm that Dark Alessa created. Therefore, no one really wins.

or

b.) Alessa's plan works and she is granted a new mother in Rose. Now with Sharon's memories to work with after reuniting with her, Alessa can extend her sphere of influence and create a world just like the one Sharon and Rose lived in, where they can stay forever. In other words, Alessa doesn't want Rose to leave her alternate dimension; she wants to keep Rose all to herself.

Hope this helps. :)

they are dead! the foggy scene tells us they're in the world of the dead.

they were not freed (their soul is not stuck in the silent hill town anymore) because they solved the mystery of the silent but because the heroine helped the demon girl get inside the church and perfom the carnage on the evil people who burned her, i think she cant go in the front door because there's this big cross...

that explains why she didnt die when the evil priestess stabbed her in the heart, she didnt die cause she's already dead ;)

the coal mine below the church is the gateway to hell, same place where the girl was sacrificed (the girl was possessed by a demon on that place also, during the ritual)

edit:
oh the nurses and other monsters are the tortured soul stuck on silent hill

cool movie =D

nice explanation gothiez, thumbs up for u :D

One of the best explanations...and the only one I agree with...

Sharon and Rose are not dead...they are worse than dead...in limbo...stuck between life and death...

Silent Hill has three aspects of itself...

They still weren't back in the real world, and it was showing them and what it looked like on the other side, and the husband in the real world. They were in the same place at the same time.
