It depends on which area of Colorado you will be in. In Denver, the average temperature for December and January is a low of 16 degrees F, and a high of 48 degrees F. However, Denver is the sunniest city in the US, with low humidity, so 48 degrees in the sun can be quite comfortable.
If you are going to be up in the mountains, then the temps are quite different with lows averaging 7 degrees F, with 35 as the high. It can be much colder than this, especially when you consider the wind.
That being said, layers are the way to go. Bring sunscreen, and layer your clothing. Make sure you have gloves, warm hat, etc.

waterproof WARM winter jacket...hat and gloves.mittens.scarf, Wool coat if you don't have the other kind of jacket... Wool sweaters, or other warm shirts, blazers etc...pants, socks, shoes that can get wet from snow. do you ski? waterproof jacket, ski pants, gloves, goggles, helmet etc... it will probably be in the 20's to 40's during the day and colder than that at night. it really depends on the area of the mountains you're going to and if there is a storm moving through. It could even be negative day and night. who knows? it's colorado and our weather changes constantly.
