THe whole male apparatus is complicated--I can't imagine having the first orgasm trying to have intercourse with a girl. Most likely the guy would ejaculate quickly, perhaps even before penetration. I recommend every guy needs to learn how his tools (penis/testes/etc) work before he uses them on someone else. Practice makes perfect.

I'd say #2 - it is sometimes more difficult for a guy to actually perform well when he doesn't understand his body and its functions - especially in regards to his penis. Thru masterbation, at least a guy knows what stimulates him, and how fast...and can thereby lengthen the time to climax thru various methods. He would also be less worried about "what was gonna happen"...
