You're still covered. Like you said they're reminder pills, meaning they're inactive pills. You don't even have to take them if you choose not to as long as you remember to take the active pills on the scheduled date. Another option is to go on to your next pack of active pills & skip your period all together. I used to do it all the time. I had no ill effects, in fact, there's a birth control called Seasonale that does just that & you have a period only 4 times a year. Good luck.

The actual birth control pills are all one color. Those keep you from getting pregnant. The pills that you take for a week to let your body get your period are another color, and those don't actually do anything. They are really only to make sure you don't get out of the habit of taking the pill each day. When you are on these "inactive" pills, you need to use another kind of protection (condoms). After you go back on the regular birth control pill afterwards, you will still need to use extra protection for a few days to a week until the pills have a chance to start taking effect again.

If you get your period while you are taking your regular birth control pills, you are still protected. It's called "breakthrough bleeding". The only time you are not protected and would need additional protection (condoms) is when you are taking the inactive pills, when you are taking no pills at all, and during the first week after starting back on the regular birth control pills. You should also use condoms to protect you from STD's, since the birth control pill can't do that.

Most women ovulate for about 7 days, at 14 days after the first day of their period. However, I say MOST. You may still want to use a condom just in case because you don't always know. And if you are not in a place where you want a child, it's better to be sure.
