Did some US Navy ships sport dazzle paint during WW2? I'm wondering if we think of them as being solid grey just because contemporary warships are "stand-ins" in the movies.

Yes, a great many did. Both BB-63 and BB-62 and BB-64, Missouri, New Jersey, and Wisconsin at one point in time used multiple forms of camoflouge in order to confuse enemy fire.

KEiKo has it right.......the US Navy went through a number of camouflage ( dazzle) schemes during the war and everything from carriers down to PT boats had some sort of "pattern disrupting" paint scheme....sometimes two or three different ones over the course of the war......only ships that didn't were subs...google or yahoo search any WW2 warships name and you'll get dozen of photos and all the different paint jobs...some quite bizzare!
