1. to determine what you have learned during the unit of study compared with what you knew/didn't know before
2. to determine if you already know the material and thus need to accelerate
3. to determine specifically what information you do not know and need to learn

*I am currently taking a grad. level research course that says that pretests can cause false scores on a post test because it clues test-takers in to certain elements of importance they may not otherwise pick up on.

It can be used as a tool to evaluate how well an instructor covers material - if the material is covered evenly, or some items are skipped or glossed over.

to see how well you paid attention and how much you learned from the training given. It judges the difference in your knowledge before you were given training and afterwards
