It just so happens that my best friend is Bi, i'm a Tomboi and even though she's very attracted i've never thought about doing anything with her because it would destroy a friendship that has lasted for 25 years.

Ask him/her out for a casual date. If it works out, go slow.
If you rush into things and you realize it's not working, it may jeopardize your friendship.
But so long as the both of you are attracted to each other's gender(s), I don't see any reason not to give it a shot...
