Look out for scam artists. They'll tell you things like you're blocking something out. Then they'll hypnotize you. I've never believed that was possible personally. But they'll put suggestions into your head that aren't true. You'll seemingly remember things that didn't happen. Like my father abused me. Tortured me. Etc.. They can even take you into past lives. Yeah right. What a crock. You see this on the news. Full grown adults suddenly remembering horrible things from childhood and accusing family members. It's a bunch of crap. Look don't take my word for it. Research this subject thoroughly. Don't take whoever's word for it. Especially the guy trying to sell you something. Don't read his literature. Spend a few hours on line reading independent studies. I'm passionate when it comes to people making a living ripping others off. Good luck!

A trained therapist or psychologist can be helpful sometimes for this. Trying to remember a bad memory alone could be more emotionally painful than you may be able to handle without some support there with you. Is there someone safe in your life that you can try to verify your memories with? Someone trustworthy who will be honest either way, and not lie to protect you or someone else?
In the end you need to do what's right for you. If remembering is what you need to do, then do it safely however that may be. If you think about it and decide it's not worth knowing, there's nothing wrong with that either.

It is not always true that people who can't remember their childhood are blocking memories. Sometimes, we have just been so busy with life that we make lots of memories, so many that our mind files some away to make room for other, more important memories.
I would only worry if you are losing recent memories or older memories like your children's names or where you were born.
Honestly, the mind tends to "forget" what is not constantly brought to mind. People who talk or think a lot about the past, don't forget it, while people that don't talk or think about it, forget.
Finally, if you had a traumatic childhood and can't remember it, consider it a blessing and make happy memories for yourself from now on.

Either the events of your childhood were traumatic and you have chosen to block them out, which can only be temporary until "triggered" by an outside source, or it was just uneventful. But, it is your past, and that may have created the person you are now, but it doesn't define you. As said above, move on.

The best thing to do with a bad childhood is nothing, accept it and go on about the business of living.
You can forget, remember, talk, get counsel and relive it over and over, and nothing is going to change.
Accept it and go on.

sometimes the brain does things to protect it self. You forgetting is to protect yourself.
One problem with that is that the feelings can come out in behavior that isn't healthy.
If your forgetting is working, don't worry about it. But, if you are struggling emotionally, then seek some professional help
