darwin's theory tends to point towards a more ancient creature, not really a hen, but some kind of large bird, which has since eveolved into a chicken.

As for the answer to the question, i think it would be wise to say that it was probabily a fish-like being of some kind, as we have all evolved from sea creatures, apparently.

the egg. Because no matter what, if a chicken hatched that was a chicken egg. The egg might have been laid by a different bird and a mutation occured and a chicken came out. But none the less the egg was definately a chicken egg before there were chickens

First there was this rooster and he was lonesome, so God made him a whole bunch of playmates and he called them hens. The rooster wore the hens out so God decided to make more, To make it interesting he made them lay eggs so they wouldn't be preggers so long, and you know the rest of the story.

Ok not to sound wierd but if you think about it, where did the hen come from if not an egg to begin with.So i say the egg in the end.

it was non of them. it was bacteria first, bacteria gave form to an unknown animal, that animal by the time changed to hen, and it will change by the time in future.... same as monkys and humans
