I bought a bog standard basic cheap acer laptop in June, and so far so good!
I mainly wanted it for some work stuff and for the kids to play games on, and since I've bought it, we haven't used the desktop at all.
I also invested in a mobile datacard, which means I'm internet connected anywhere there's a mobile signal.
The battery lasts at least three hours, which is quite good.
Last week, we had a long car journey (7 hours), and were under time pressure, so we couldn't stop, and my son was able to be online for the last three hours of the journey, chatting to his friends at home and playing runescape, with no problems..... it made it possible to complete our journey on civil terms!!!
I have to say I'm delighted with it so far. I have Windows XP and also invested in Microsoft Office, and have a lot of spreadsheets and powerpoint presentations stored on it.
I'd say Go For It! Mine is a Travel Mate 2420

I am currently on my second Acer if that says anything. If you've never owned a laptop before a word of caution; they can not be left on all the time as most desk tops can as they heat up much quicker. I learned the hard way with my first Acer.
If I didn't get called into work that morning I just might not be here right now. I was in the habit of leaving my computer on over night and when I got the call to go in I checked my pc and it had over heated. The keys on the left side of the keyboard had melted and was obviously hot to touch. I'm positive that if I didn't get that call and had slept even just a couple more hours there would have been a fire.
Perhaps it was my own ignorance as it was my first notebook and I probably should have known better but to be honest, I didn't see the difference between the notebooks and desktops.
Other than that the Acer's have been good to me for the little I use it for.

My son had one and 10 months down the line it developed faults. And Acer are not good at all with customer service.
The laptop was guaranteed for 2 years. But after several returns to the company the problem wasn't fixed. They hadn't a clue, and the last time after I sent a letter saying how I felt, they had the cheek to say send it back and we won't charge for looking at it.
In the end we sent a letter to Comet head office where we bought it from telling them how we had been treated and they said we could take it back to the shop and get a different one. (we paid £50.00 more for a Toshiba) which so far has been great.
Comet spoke to Acer and they wasn't impressed with their answers either.

i own one... so far it's been great. my very first computer back in '91 was an acer desktop... it was great for it's time. the company is really more known for it's monitors. about 6 months ago i bought an acer laptop it is great. no problems. compaired to dell way better... sure dell offers a lot but the put a lot of their own software junk on it before they send it to you and if anything goes wrong... if you don't know computers your screwed. you'll either have to pay alot to get it fixed or deal with customer service reps that are outsourced to other countrys and wont be able to help you at all with the language barrier/culture barrier.
good luck

I have an Acer Aspire 3000. I have had it for about a year and a half now and not a single problem. It seems to be really good. But yes, if you take care of it, it will run fine for you.

bought one a few months back. very good machine,,, feels a bit fragile but runs everything i need..
If you are going for one shop around as the specs ( and costs) can vary. But 700 should get you at least a 100G harddrive + 1G of memory..
