You go to college to learn. Some people like to know things & understand them. You can be a better voter, citizen, parent, etc. that way. And a better worker. You have a better society with educated people.

If someone goes to college to have a better future career then you need to tailor your studies to that. Law, medicine, engineering, accounting, etc. And you need to work real hard.

If money is your only goal & not learning, then you can jump into the business world w/o education. Some of the wealthiest people I know are uneducated but worked hard & took risks in business.

I feel sorry for all the underemployed people (and unemployed). The economy is just changing so fast & most people can't keep up. I think the US (and a lot of Europe) is undergoing a slow, long-term decline in standard of living. I know this for a fact. Take a tour of the old industrial rust belt of the northeast/midwest USA. And a lot of the jobs being created in the sunbelt areas are sh** office work like call centers (but even that garbage work is being outsourced to other countries) or other menial service work like coffee shops, big box retailers, etc.

Job security is a problem now for everyone, not just college grads. Especially bad for those without a degree, so say the statistics.

At least almost everyone is sinking together though.

Most people do not use their college degree in the work place...I have an aunt who is "over-educated". Nobody feels they can afford to pay her.
I know people with Masters Degrees in Philosophy who design roof trusses and write for newspapers. MBAs who are pastors.
My own husband and father never used their college degrees in their jobs, but both have had good salaried jobs for most of their adult lives (my father is now retired).

Sometimes what you think you want when you go to college and what you want to do with your life after graduation are not the same thing.

College wasn't orginally meant as a passport to a high salaried career. ; )

What I have found as a recent graduate is that it is not what you know....it is who you know... take every advantage of meeting someone that will be able to advance your career and don't be afraid to ask them for career advice or someone that they know that will be able to help you out....80% of jobs are never advertised...at least that is what i was told....

They were lazy and didn't take advantage of their campus career center. Also a college degree doesn't mean much if you get less than a 3.0. Might as well not have gone.
