There's nothing "dirty" about KY or any other lubricating substance. People use it to make sexual relations more pleasant or less painful. But, it was originally developed by and for the medical profession to facilitate examination of sensitive skin areas.

K-Y Jelly was original created in 1917 for medical use. It was a first choice among doctors over petroleum-based products, due to its natural base ingredients (carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium alginate and EDTA).

It wasn't until later that it was employed as a sex lubricant (it has been available OTC since 1980).

KY is used as a lubricating agent to help with sonograms, it is used to perform examinations of a delicate nature. It can also be used to condition rubber seals.
