It was one of the scariest things I've ever been through. It started with the wind stopping completely. Then a sound like a freight train running right by the house. The wind was all around. The house creaked and groaned. The trees creaked and groaned. All the animals went wild. My sisters were crying and screamed every time something crashed into the house. A few windows broke. My mother had to leave my sisters and me to let the horses out of the pens into the pasture, so they would have a chance. We huddled together in the hall, knowing there wasnt a thing we could do but wait it out and hope it didnt hit the house or throw something really big into it. Equally as scarey is seeing the aftermath and knowing how powerful it was and how close it came.

I haven't been through a tornado, thank the Lord. We have enough with volcanoes and earthquakes. However, I have seen the awesomeness of tornadoes on television news and have talked with folks who HAVE been through tornadoes.
Tornadoes are a formidable weather phenomenon. The damage they wreak is unbelievable! Homes can be completely destroyed, with pieces of them blown miles away. Flying debris, such as trees, boards and such, can be lethal. Even cars and trucks are picked up and thrown for a distance. Animals and people, too.
I think the most devastating result of a tornado is the damage it does to people's minds and spirits, not to just their bodies. The loss of their homes and/or family and friends puts them into shock and depression for a very long time. Many become homeless and may or may not be able to rebuild their lives.
Like hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, tornadoes can devastate the lives of human beings and all living creatures.

I've been thru all kinds of weather....earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes. The tornado was by far the most scary. We could see the twister cloud off in the distance. There was wind, rain, lightning and lots of noise at first. After we rushed to the basement it was dead quiet...that was horrible.
The tornado picked up the house three doors down from us and toppled a big rig about a block away but left our house standing. They are so unpredictable, their course doesn't seem to have rhyme or reason.

it's really scary. the sky goes black and it's really, REALLY windy and raining hard. usually it's really humid outside too.
if the national weather service has issued a tornado warning, that means that one has been sighted near your area, and the fire department in your city blasts these sirens that last until the storms die down (which can be hours). the sirens mean you must go to your basement (or a safe place) and stay there until the sirens go off again. can't watch tv or go on the computer because the storm could knock your electricity out.
basically, it really sucks.
